New Year's Writing and Reading Goals for 2011

I hate to admit it, but I've already screwed up as for as my writing resolutions were for 2011. (And we aren't going anywhere near my exercise and dieting goals!)
Just how hard can it be to get down 250 words a day? Apparently, harder than I thought. But then, I didn't limit it to my fiction, either. I wrote on my Resolutions List that I was to write 250 words a day, be it on blog posts, novels, etc. I'm running with the etc. part. Have you ever written a shopping list to feed and supply four teenage girls? I can drop 250 words there easy. And answering emails? I tried to be wordy without being redundant. Does commenting on blogs count? Maybe I should draw a line there, don't you think?

Anywho, some of my other writing resolutions include; finishing Witches Don't Wear Socks and getting it out there, fleshing out two more novels I have in the oven, and twisting Time Wardens around to where I want it (total revision).

As for last year's reading goals, the results are as follows:
Young Adult novels: 25/24
Writing books: 6/24
Fantasy novels: 26/24
Research books: 0/12
Biographies: 4/12
Writing magazines: 13/60

For 2011, I think I'll stick to:
Young Adult novels: 2/month
Writing books: 1/month
Fantasy novels: 2/month
Research books/Biographies: 1/month
Writing magazines: 2/month

Do You make reading goals for the year? If you do, are they specific?

My reading goals are to read something of my choosing for no other purpose than entertainment. And not to critique as I read.

My committment to writing 250 words a day has to include blogging, critiques, prompts (blogfests) and e-mails or I'd never meet a writing goal :)

I hadn't thought of shopping lists though. Probably b/c I shop like I write - by the seat of my memory.

Not good, actually.

This is why I don't make resolutions. Because then when I screw up I feel like a failure. *chuckle* It's much easier to just work hard and see what happens.

And that pic is adorable!

Mmmmmmm; reading goals? Well, does it count if I read everything my eyes touch? If I added it all up, I would guess that I read about two full encyclopaedias per year. Oh. What's that you say? I spelled encyclopaedia wrong? No, no. I spelled it jus' the way Jiminy Cricket taught me to spell it when he sang:

Eeeen-cy-clo-pae-dia!
E-N-C-Y-C-L-O-P-AE-D-I-A!

Do you remember that song?
(Hopefully, the song has distracted everyone from the question an' I won't hafta' answer any more clearly than that)

My reading goal this year is to read at least one chapter every night before bed. Usually, if it's a good story, that ends up being several chapters.

As far as writing, I give up on goals. It's just baby steps each day. :)

I need to catch up on my TBR pile just in general and finally get myself a Kindle!

I don't make reading goals for myself. I do have a TBR list and work off that the best I can. I usually read two books a month.

LOL at that pic.

Good luck with your goals!

I don't really make reading goals.

No, I don't make reading goals. I make general writing goals, and the reading gets sandwiched in between! ;o) Good luck with yours!

You blow my reading out of the water! I don't have goals for reading, I just get to them when there's a break in my life. I wish I could read more. Maybe I need to do this too!

I'm inspired by your resolutions--and cheer you on to a successful year of writing and reading! Some of my reading goals include reading Newbery award winners, among others...

Thanks for stopping by and commenting over at my place. It was great to hear from you :-)

your teenage shopping list gave me a real chuckle. it's AMAZING how much food they go through!!!!

as for reading goals, mine are not specific. my only goal is to read at least 50 YA books this year. That would be HUGE for me. So far I've only read one so I better get it together :)

Good luck with your goals!!!

You'll get back to it! Establishing a habit takes practice, but once it takes, it takes... My writing goals are on target (in January it is an editing target) but largely because I have ABNA at the end of it, so it is a 'hard deadline' (which I highly recommend) instead of a soft... if I don't get done, it won't be good enough to enter.

As for reading... I like to think I read a book a week, but in January, all 4 books are going to be edit reads (2 for myself, 2 for friends) *sigh* I'd never try to commit to some other plan, as I can't really predict when those will come up.

Those are some pretty specific goals. I hope you finish Witches...I used to enjoy reading your chapters. Do you still post on TNBW?

Don't be too hard on yourself. Remember the gyms are always full in January and by April back to normal. Just one scene at a time and you'll get there.

Now I have to check and see if I'm taking my own advice. Excuse me, I'll be back.

Good luck on your goals.

My goal is to read 150 books this year, but I'm not specific about categories.

Good luck with your goals! My reading goal this year is to read *less* and write more... I tend to use reading as a procrastination tool from writing. I read 150 books last year, and I'm sticking with my original goal from last year, which was 75. This is going to be tough!

Debbie said....Mine are...oh...second and third draft of a Dirty Job and to get one rejection/acceptance letter.

It might help if i got working on that mind you.

Oh yes, I've declared to read 1 book a week this year! ;) I haven't gone into specific genres as I don't know what I'm going to read until I pick it up.

Good luck with yours and have a wonderful week! ;)

Ooh, I want a kitten like that!!! I don't usually make New Years Resolutions, cause I always break them and then I feel rather bad :( But I have a broad plan for the year in my mind. That's already out of the window with my internet probs, so I get where you're coming from completely.

I've never made reading goals before. In the past I've been a prolific (hate that word!) reader, but that's slowed down now I'm focusing so much on my writing. So maybe some goals might be in order... ;)

Best of luck with yours.

Good luck with your resolutions!
I guess I would make them if I could drive (to the library/bookstore) or had permission to just buy books all the time on the kindle. Oh well, I guess we'll just see how it goes again.
As for writing, as much as I can get done, along with Screnzy (even with the school Europe trip over easter break! Aaah!) and Nano as well.
Happy 2011! :)
